Nutty leads and is the toasted reading the trade language keeps returning to: 'a true toasted coconut scent', sold as not sweet and not tropical-fruity. Dry_woody is the shell itself, a hard lignified husk rather than flesh. Tropical carries the coconut identity and is not lowered further, because whatever else the note is, every source agrees it still smells of coconut. Lactonic is deliberate and it is the number most likely to be wrong: the shell should be less creamy than the flesh, but the one reviewer describing a real coconut-adjacent composition here starts with 'a strong, creamy coconut note', so zeroing it would assert an absence nobody stated. Mineral comes from the same review, the 'mineral scent of wet rocks' and 'sea-spray saltiness' that cuts through. Sweet_vanillic is the residual sugar of the dried nut, kept under the flesh notes. Below that: a smoky trace for the toasted char, then powdery, earthy, creamy_woody, green, a faint aquatic lift and a little fruity. The smoky and dry facets are inference from trade marketing, not from any datasheet, so spreads run 0.20-0.25.

Origin

The hard endocarp of Cocos nucifera, the part left after the flesh is taken. No manufacturer or perfumer source names it as a discrete raw material and describes its smell. Scientific literature on coconut-shell extracts exists but addresses antifungal activity, not odour. In trade writing 'coconut shell', 'coconut husk' and 'toasted coconut' are used loosely for the same drier register, sold explicitly against the sweet sun-lotion coconut.

Usage in Perfumery

Parfumo's note page claims 70 perfumes and says the note occurs 'throughout the entire fragrance' rather than in one stage, first used in 2007 and most recently in 2026. This repository's own count of the Parfumo data finds 4 placements across 3 brands. Perfumers reach for it where the creamy coconut of lactones would be too sweet, and it is what carries a coconut identity into woody and mineral compositions.
