A pale Patagonian timber known almost entirely through cooperage. It reads as a soft, sweet wood rather than a dry or resinous one, with red-fruit and honeyed facets and a light toast behind.
Scent Profile
Dry_woody leads because the referent is timber, but it is held below acacia-wood (0.60) and chestnut-wood (0.62) for a reason the source states: lenga gives 'a low contribution of astringency and very soft, delicate tannins'. It is a mild wood, and the only wood descriptor offered is 'touches of cedar', which is a touch, not a body. Fruity is the facet the maker names first, twice: lenga 'enhances red fruit'. I have kept it under dry_woody and given it the widest spread in the vector, because 'enhances red fruit' is a claim about what happens to the wine, not a claim that the wood smells of red fruit. Origin
Nothofagus pumilio, the lenga southern beech, from Chilean and Argentine Patagonia. It is not a perfumery raw material. Every reachable description comes from TN Coopers, a Patagonian barrel maker that sells lenga barrels for ageing wine and spirits, so the recorded character is what a toasted lenga barrel gives to a liquid over months, not the smell of the standing tree or the sawn plank.
Usage in Perfumery
No perfumery use is documented. Where the note appears it is an evocation of the barrel: a light, sweet, fruit-tinged wood for a boozy or gourmand base, in the same territory as chestnut-wood and oaken-barrel but softer and less tannic.
