Gamma Octalactone
Note Profile
About
Fresh coconut pulp with a coumarin warmth
Scent Profile
Gamma-octalactone smells sweet and creamy, like fresh coconut pulp rather than dry, fatty coconut flakes. A warm, hay-like sweetness close to coumarin runs under the coconut. A faint herbaceous, almost caraway-like edge and a light fruity, waxy shade sit at the back.

Origin
Gamma-octalactone is a lactone, CAS 104-50-7, also named 5-butyloxolan-2-one. It is made synthetically, and a natural isolate grade is also sold. It is a single material with a stated identity.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use it for creamy coconut effects in tropical, gourmand and solar accords. It also adds a soft lactonic sweetness near coumarin and tonka. Arctander says it works higher in a fragrance than coumarin.
