Note Profile
Indian Coral Jasmine refers to the intensely fragrant Indian flower commonly known as parijat or coral jasmine, botanically Nyctanthes arbor-tristis. It produces small white blossoms with orange tubes that release a heady, jasmine-like scent at night, often used in Indian gardens and rituals. In perfumery the note captures its honeyed, narcotic white floral character distinct from standard Jasminum-based jasmines.
Indian Coral Jasmine has a rich, sweet white-floral scent with a strong jasmine-like heart, accented by honeyed nectar and a creamy, almost gardenia-like depth. It can show delicate fruity and slightly green facets around the edges, while remaining overtly narcotic and enveloping. Compared to classic jasmine absolute, it leans a touch more luminous and nectarous, with less pronounced animalic indole and a softer, cushioned floral body.
The note is inspired by the flowers of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, a night-blooming shrub native to the Indian subcontinent and widely known as parijat or coral jasmine. In nature, the blossoms open and exhale their fragrance at night, often carpeting the ground by morning, and the plant holds significant cultural and religious value in India. In perfumery, there is no large-scale commercial absolute dedicated to coral jasmine, so the scent is typically captured via small-batch extractions, tinctures, or reconstructed through accords using white-floral and nectarous materials that emulate its natural odor profile.
Perfumers would primarily use Indian Coral Jasmine as a heart note in white-floral compositions, bringing a distinctive, luminous jasmine-like signature with honeyed and gardenia-tinged nuances. It pairs well with other tropical florals such as frangipani, gardenia, and ylang-ylang, as well as with creamy sandalwood, musks, and soft amber bases. In concept-driven or regionally inspired fragrances, it can be highlighted soliflore-style to evoke Indian night gardens, temple offerings, or the serene atmosphere of evening-blooming flowers.
