Rose tea is a rose held inside a brewed tea leaf. The flower leads and is soft rather than jammy. Under it sits the tannic, dried-leaf warmth of an infusion, with a thin citrus and berry sparkle on top and a musky, pale-wood finish. Two brands use the term two different ways, and only one of them puts a real tea material in the bottle.

Scent Profile

Floral leads and both sources agree on it: Teaology names rose first in the harmony, Harney's tea is described only as 'a delicate floral aroma of roses'. Tobacco_hay is the brewed infusion, and it carries the widest spread in the vector at 0.22, because only one of the two sources has a tea material in it at all. Green is the leaf itself, kept modest because neither source says which tea. Below the naming line sit fruity and citrus and for Teaology's mandarin and blackcurrant, clean_musk for its 'velvety waves of musk', powdery and honeyed for the rose, dry_woody for the whitewood, and sour for tannin.

Origin

A compound accord, not a raw material. No supplier sells 'rose tea' as a stocked base. The clearest use is Teaology's Black Rose Tea eau de toilette, composed by Nathalie Lorson, whose own copy reads: 'Its bouquet flutters with the enveloping harmonies of rose and perfectly steeped tea infusions, only to be invigorated by the sparkling touch of mandarin and blackcurrant essence. Velvety waves of musk and whitewood smooths its sultry finish.' Harney & Sons' rose-scented tea gives the drink side: 'A delicate floral aroma of roses.'

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a softened rose. The tea leaf takes the sweetness off the flower and gives it a dry, tannic base, which is the same job green tea does for jasmine in jasmine-tea. Brands pair it with citrus and red-fruit tops and finish it on musk and pale wood.
