Scent Profile

White floral leads. All three suppliers open with the same claim, that it is a 'rich and natural floral lactone' with a 'jasmine petal-like character'. Lactonic is the second half of its identity and it is what the molecule is. Scentspiracy calls it 'creamy, slightly waxy-fatty' and both Fraterworks and Perfumer's Apprentice name coconut milk. Fruity is the peach and apricot every source lists, and it is consistently called 'delicate', so it stays under the two facets above it. Tropical is the coconut milk read as fruit rather than as cream, plus Scentspiracy's 'soft tropical floral radiance'. Floral is the general floral body underneath the jasmine-specific character, not a separate flower. Sweet vanillic is the sweetness a delta-lactone carries and no source names it directly.

Origin

Jasmolactone is a synthetic delta-lactone, CAS 32764-98-0, 6-(pent-3-en-1-yl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one. Firmenich is the originating house. It is a positional isomer of Jasmine Lactone, CAS 25524-95-2. Scentspiracy states the two have 'noticeably different olfactory signatures and separate regulatory dossiers', so they are not synonyms and must not be aliased to each other.

Usage in Perfumery

Used to naturalise white-floral accords, mainly jasmine, tuberose and gardenia. It works as a fixative rather than a top note. Perfumer's Apprentice reports substantivity of 336 hours, about two weeks. Scentspiracy says 'well over 48 hours'. Fraterworks says it 'occupies a middle ground' between the sharper fruity lactones and the heavier milky ones.
