Kyara is the highest grade of agarwood. It is the resin-soaked heartwood of Aquilaria trees from a small area of Vietnam, and it smells cool, sweet and resinous rather than barnyard. Trade sources describe it as incense purity with vanilla, camphor and sandalwood inside it, clean where ordinary oud is animalic.

Kyara Wood smells resinous and incense like, clean almost to purity rather than barnyard. Underneath sits an old temple wood, heartwood rather than bare timber. A vanilla sweetness threads through it, next to a soft sandalwood creaminess. A cool camphor note keeps it fresh rather than warm, and a clean musk gives it its purity. A gentle warmed resin smokiness closes it, from being heated rather than burned.

Origin

Agarwood is the dark resin an Aquilaria tree lays down in its heartwood in response to infection. Kyara is the top grade of that resin, produced in a small area of Vietnam, and it trades above 10,000 USD per gram. It is almost never distilled. It is heated gently over mica plates in the Japanese Kodo ceremony, so the smell most people mean by kyara is a heated chip, not an oil. In perfumery the kyara effect is built from premium agarwood oils, clean oud synthetics, and vanilla, camphor and sandalwood modifiers.

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a base note in high-end oriental and incense compositions, and as the clean counterweight to ordinary oud. Perfumers reach for it when they want agarwood depth without the animalic, barnyard register. It sits well under sandalwood, benzoin, vanilla and frankincense. In almost every commercial fragrance the note is a reconstruction, because the real material is burned in ceremony rather than extracted.
