About

Longoza is the Malagasy name for Aframomum angustifolium, a wild cardamom of Madagascar and tropical Africa. The perfumery material is a seed oil, steam distilled. It is not the ginger lily, Hedychium coronarium. It smells floral and spicy, with slightly fruity, creamy and powdery touches and hints of ginger and ylang-ylang. It opens fresh and dries warm.

Origin

Longoza is the Malagasy name for Aframomum angustifolium (Zingiberaceae), also called wild cardamom, which grows in Madagascar and tropical Africa. The perfumery material is a seed oil, steam-distilled for about five hours at roughly 0.5% yield in the Sava and Analandjirofo regions; a separate leaf oil is distilled in Atsinanana. It was registered as a fine-fragrance raw material by Maison Lautier 1795, a Symrise project, in 2021, after perfumer Suzy Le Helley wrote her thesis on the plant in 2019. It is NOT Hedychium coronarium, the ginger lily, which this record previously named in error.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use longoza primarily in the heart of floral compositions to add complexity and a spicy-floral lift. It blends well with white florals, spices, and woody notes, and is valued for enhancing both feminine and unisex fragrances. Its unique character can bridge fresh top notes and richer base accords.
