Methyl Laitone
Note Profile
About
Creamy coconut-milk lactone
Scent Profile
Methyl Laitone smells creamy and milky, like coconut milk rather than sweet coconut flesh. A soft fruity, tropical note sits inside the cream. It has a faint coumarin-like nuance and dries to a dry, slightly powdery softness. It adds roundness without much sugar.

Origin
Methyl Laitone is a spiro-lactone made and patented by Givaudan, 8-methyl-1-oxaspiro[4.5]decan-2-one. The neat material is a white solid, so it is sold as a 10% solution in dipropylene glycol or triethyl citrate. The name echoes the French word for milk, 'lait'.
Usage in Perfumery
It is very powerful and is used from traces up to about 2% of the 10% solution. Givaudan says it gives cosmetic body to white flowers such as jasmine, gardenia, tuberose and ylang ylang, and to fruity accords such as peach and osmanthus. It adds milkiness to sandalwood accords, pairs with coumarin and tonka, and lasts well on damp and dry fabric.
