About

Mochi is Japanese glutinous rice pounded into a soft elastic cake. As a fragrance note it is an accord, not an extract. It names steamed sweet rice, rice milk and the dusting of dry starch on the surface of the confection.

Scent Profile

Lactonic leads. Both sources reach for milk first: 'milky, creamy, and starchy facets' from the glossary, 'sweetened rice milk' from the brand. Powdery is close behind and is the starch on the outside of the cake, called 'slightly powdery' and 'a unique powdery, airy, and subtly lactonic quality'. Sweet vanillic is third and is kept below the milk on purpose, because the glossary says the accord captures 'the soft, elastic, and creamy texture of the confection, rather than a strong sweetness'. Nutty carries the toasted rice and the almond nuance that both sources name. Clean musk is the gentle white musk both sources put underneath. Below the line, fruity covers the 'subtle fruit' of the glossary and DedCool's peach nectar, and floral is the orris butter. Sandalwood and amber are in DedCool's formula but not scored: they are one product's construction, not a claim about what the word mochi smells like.

Origin

There is no mochi raw material. The accord is assembled and the sources name the parts: steamed rice, rice milk, orris butter and gentle musks, with toasted vanilla and almond over the top. No formula is fixed, so no two mochi accords need smell alike.

Usage in Perfumery

Four Fragrantica placements, none on Parfumo. It is a recent gourmand note. DedCool builds a whole product on it, Mochi Milk, described as 'peach nectar and pillowy marshmallow whipped with sweetened rice milk' with 'sandalwood, amber, and white musk' underneath.
