About
Mongolian deer musk is the dried gland grain of the musk deer taken from Mongolian stock. It is the same animal material as Siberian musk and reads as the softer type of it: animalic at the core, but powdery and sweet on top rather than sharp. Every trade source that sells both types says the Mongolian grain is the gentler one. It is a CITES-restricted animal product with no legitimate supply through the big aroma houses, so all published description of it comes from specialist grey-market suppliers and from people who have smelled samples side by side.

Animalic leads and is the one thing no source drops. Al-Sunnah's baseline for musk is 'strong animal and potent', and the Mongolian type is described as a softened version of that, not a clean one. It sits below the published siberian-musk note at 0.78 because three sources put it there: Sibermusk calls it softer, Al-Sunnah calls it 'slighter softer and sweeter', and an OudDict poster who compared samples wrote 'The smell of musk is calmer and softer than Siberian' while calling Siberian 'urine and ammonia'. Powdery is the second most-repeated word and comes from two independent sources - Sibermusk's 'powdery, sweet, chocolate notes' and OudDict's 'the Mongolian is a sweet powdery'. It is scored well above the the Siberian note carries because that powderiness is the specific thing every source uses to tell the two apart. Clean_musk is held level with siberian-musk rather than moved: nothing fetched says the musk-proper body differs between the two, only that the animalic edge does, so moving it would be inventing a difference. Sweet_vanillic carries the sweetness all three descriptive sources name. Dry_woody and leather are the deer-musk base that the Siberian note carries at 0.30 and 0.32, kept close because no source claims the Mongolian grain lacks them. Below the naming line: coffee_cacao for Sibermusk's 'chocolate notes', which only one supplier says and which may be a restatement of powdery-sweet rather than a real cocoa facet; aromatic_herbal for one forum poster's 'significantly more herbal'; earthy, honeyed and fruity carried across from the sibling material.

Origin
Animal. The grain is dried musk taken from the gland pod of the male musk deer, sold by weight by specialist suppliers. The Mongolian pod is nearly hairless where the Siberian pod is furry, which is how the trade tells them apart, but that is a physical mark and not an odour claim. Sibermusk, which stocks both, says plainly that 'Mongolian musk is softer than Siberian musk by smell, with powdery, sweet, chocolate notes'. Al-Sunnah Perfumes describes musk in general as 'strong animal and potent' and then says 'The Mongolian Deer Musk is slighter softer and sweeter'. Both suppliers add that the same grain smells different wet than dry, 'from soft to very animal', so the material is not stable batch to batch.
Usage in Perfumery
A base material, used in tiny weight and usually as a tincture or a maceration. Sibermusk recommends it macerated in sandalwood oil, oud or rose. Attested on 9 Parfumo entries across 6 brands and absent from Fragrantica, which fits a material that artisanal oud and attar houses name openly and mainstream brands cannot use at all. In a formula it does the work the published musk note cannot: it carries a real animalic weight under the sweetness.
