Nail Polish is the smell of a freshly opened bottle of lacquer. It is an ester smell: sweet and fruit-like from a distance, sharp and acrid up close, and gone within an hour or two.

Origin

There is no material to distil. Nail polish is a consumer product and the note is a fantasy accord built from what the product actually gives off. The dominant odorant is ethyl acetate, with benzyl acetate named as the specific ester that reads as nail polish rather than as generic solvent. Toluene adds a sweet benzene-like edge, formaldehyde resin an acrid one, and plasticisers sit under both. Nail polish remover is a different smell and is not this note: it is acetone and methyl acetate, drier and more ketone-like. Ethyl acetate is also what a winemaker calls volatile acidity, the fault that makes wine smell of nail polish above about 150 mg/L.

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a cultural signifier rather than for literal replication. Five perfumes on Fragrantica list it. It signals femininity, artifice and self-construction, the smell of a self-care ritual, and it works as a sharp synthetic flash at the very top of a composition. It is close enough to a fruity ester accord that a little of it can read as fruit rather than as a solvent.
