Olive Leaf is the silvery foliage of the Mediterranean olive tree, not its wood and not its fruit. Four trade and brand sources describe the same thing: green, bitter, dry and dusty, with a metallic sharpness that keeps it from reading as a soft garden leaf. It is the smell of scrubland in July rather than of a hedge after rain.

Scent Profile

Green above everything else, but the dry bitter green of crushed grey foliage, not a wet leaf. An aromatic_herbal body sits under it and is what one source calls savoury, close to Mediterranean scrub. A mineral facet carries the silvery, metallic sharpness and the warm dust that two sources reach for independently. Under those, a thin dry_woody trace persists for days on a strip, and an earthy note grounds the whole thing. Traces only: a slight leathery edge on the cut leaf, a dry hay-like astringency, and a hint of bitter almond that one source names alongside tomato plants. Sharper and more bitter than myrtle, drier and less sweet than fig leaf.

Origin

Leaves of Olea europaea, across the Mediterranean basin. There is no common commercial essential oil, so the note is usually built as an accord or from a solvent extract rather than distilled at scale. One source separates the three odours the same tree gives: the leaf is bitter-green and slightly leathery, the wood is a dry linear woodiness from the rough bark, and the fruit is oily and greasy-fruity. Only the first of those is this note.

Usage in Perfumery

A heart material in Mediterranean, fig, herbal and green-fougere compositions, where it supplies dry bitterness rather than sap. It pairs with fig leaf, myrtle, rosemary, tomato leaf and dry woods, and it is used to stop a green accord turning sweet. Small doses read as sun-warmed dust; larger ones turn austere and metallic.
