Rose thorn is the green part of the rose plant, not the flower: stems, thorns and sepals. It is sharp, cold and slightly metallic, and it is used to cut the sweetness of rose petal notes.

Scent Profile

Green dominates and both sources reach it independently. Premiere Peau leads with 'a fresh, green note, like the rose plant's stems and thorns' and names the construction - galbanum, cis-3-hexenol, violet leaf. Shay & Blue arrive from the other direction and describe the stem-and-sepal rose as 'Green and Botanical purity'. Mineral is the metallic edge. Premiere Peau calls it 'the green, sharp, slightly metallic impression of rose stems rather than petals', and Shay & Blue's 'florist's fridge - cold, crisp' is the same cold sharpness said another way. This is the facet that separates the note from a plain leaf green. Aromatic herbal is the 'crisp, slightly herbaceous quality' that Premiere Peau states twice. Earthy is the one facet that grows rather than fades: 'a subtle earthiness that adds depth' at the start, and later 'the earthiness becomes more pronounced'. Below, dry woody is held low because the source calls it 'the faintest hint of woodiness' and that is the only mention. Aquatic ozonic is 'a garden after rain'. Floral is the smallest and least secure value here, because neither source says the thorn itself smells floral - both say the opposite - and it is set just above zero only for the rose-plant connection that the published Rose Leaves note also carries.

Origin

There is no rose thorn extract. Premiere Peau states plainly that 'rose thorn is a conceptual note - not a distillable material', and no supplier listing for a rose thorn or rose stem absolute could be found. The accord is built from galbanum for the green snap, cis-3-hexenol for the crushed-stem effect, and metallic-green materials such as violet leaf absolute.

Usage in Perfumery

A heart-level modifier inside rose compositions. Premiere Peau says it adds 'an angular, prickly quality to rose compositions, cutting through petal-sweetness with a stem-green sharpness'. Shay & Blue describe the same effect from the finished-fragrance side, pairing rose with mint, galbanum or citrus to reach a cold 'green rose'.
