About
Roots is a botanical-part umbrella, not one smell. It groups vetiver rhizome, orris, angelica and costus: the hidden half of plants, earth-stained, woody and faintly bitter, with a downward pull. Root notes differ from wood notes, which are drier and less organic. It is deliberately broad and it does not lean toward any one member, because the members disagree.

Roots smells earth-stained and underground, the hidden half of a plant rather than its wood. A downward-pulling woodiness runs through it too, though softer and more organic than a dry timber note. A faint bitterness sits at the edge, tying the earthy and woody sides together. It stays broad and unspecific, closer to soil than to any single root.

Origin
No material is sold as roots. The term covers underground plant organs and the extracts taken from them. Premiere Peau's own list is enough to show the spread inside it: vetiver is smoky, orris is powdery, angelica is musky, costus is animalic. Perfumer and Flavorist goes further and doubts the category holds together at all, writing that roots are as ambiguous as woods are, and asking whether vetiver, patchouli and sandalwood really resemble each other despite all being called woods. The same trade article notes that rooty is routinely confused with vetiver, because vetiver is rooty and woody at once.

Structural, in the base. Root notes are essential in chypre, fougere, woody and amber compositions. 23 Fragrantica placements and 4 Parfumo across 4 brands. Fragrantica files it under greens, herbs and fougeres, which is a poor fit for an earthy, woody category.
