No material and no natural referent. The one trade source found is explicit: "'Satin' is not a specific aromatic ingredient. In perfumery the term is applied metaphorically to smooth, soft note effects built from natural and synthetic materials." It is a texture word, and the same source says it 'symbolizes the blend of textures rather than a specific ingredient'. The fabric it borrows from is a weave, not a smell. Wikipedia describes satin as producing 'a characteristically glossy, smooth or lustrous material' because 'light is not scattered as much when hitting the fibres'. That is a description of reflected light, and it carries no odour information at all.

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a texture claim on a composition rather than as an ingredient. The one source's worked example is: 'A satin-style fragrance presents a smooth, soft profile, often built on warm notes. It may feature creamy florals, such as jasmine or tuberose, that lend a soft, plush quality to the composition.' Attested in 8 Fragrantica perfumes and no Parfumo entries.
