About

Solar Notes is a group note for the smell of sun on skin: monoi, tiare, coconut and vanilla over the salicylate that every suntan oil is built on. It is a thing perfumery invented rather than a thing that grows, which is why no facet and no family selects it and its members had to be named.

Scent Profile

Sweet and vanillic over a heady white floral, with coconut lactone running through it. Warm amber underneath, a little ripe tropical fruit, and the faint powdery salicylate that makes it read as sunscreen rather than as dessert.

Origin

No single source and no rule - the nine members are named in scripts/build-group-note-vectors.py. Benzyl salicylate is the material the whole effect rests on and brands almost never print it, so it carries a weight floor rather than its measured use, which is zero. Tiare, monoi, frangipani, ylang-ylang and coconut are what they print instead.

Usage in Perfumery

A solar accord is the heart of a beach fragrance and it is used almost nowhere else. It reads as holiday, and perfumers reach for it when that is the whole brief. Fragrantica publishes it in 525 perfumes.
