About

Silvanone is a musk, and everything else about it is a shading of that. It reads sweet and powdery rather than clean and laundered, with a soft animalic warmth underneath that the maker attributes to nitromusk character. It does not smell of a single note. It smells of skin-close diffusion that stays put for a long time.

Scent Profile

Clean_musk leads and is the only claim either source makes first: both call it a macrocyclic musk before anything else. Powdery and sweet_vanillic come next, from the same four descriptor words given by the maker and repeated by the reseller: musky, sweet, powdery, animalic. Animalic is that fourth word, and the sources tie it to 'aspects of nitromusk' rather than to civet or ambrette, so it stays warm and soft rather than faecal. Faint amber_resinous and dry_woody sit below and come from blending behaviour, not from a smell claim, so they are held low. Every spread here is wide because the two sources share their wording.

Origin

Givaudan trade name for Silvanone® Supra, a macrocyclic musk material. It is a mixture, not one molecule: resellers publish the composition as cyclopentadecanone and cyclohexadecanolide (CAS 502-72-7 and 109-29-5). Givaudan describes it as 'a sweet powdery animalic macrocyclic musk with aspects of nitromusk' and as 'highly substantive and tenacious'.

Usage in Perfumery

A base musk used to hold a composition together. Givaudan says it 'works well with woody and amber notes, adds richness to floral creations especially in the sophisticated white florals, spicy carnation and oriental accords'. Perfumer's Apprentice gives a use level up to 20 per cent and tenacity on a blotter of several months.
