Smoked leather is a leather accord pushed to its burnt end. It is birch tar rather than styrax: pyrolysed wood, tarry and phenolic, over a dry tanned-hide body. Nothing is extracted from an animal. The whole thing is built, and the sources here describe the parts a perfumer builds it from rather than a finished material called 'smoked leather'.

Scent Profile

Smoky leads, and putting it above leather is the whole claim of this note. ScenTree files birch tar under 'Burnt Leather' rather than plain 'Leather', Premiere Peau calls it 'empyreumatic, dry', and Safraleine is named in trade copy for this register specifically. Leather is the tanned-hide body under the smoke, set below the published for `leather` and `black-leather` because the sources reach for the smoke first and the hide second. Dry_woody is the burnt wood the tar is made of, higher than the on `leather` because the raw material is literally pyrolysed timber. Below the line, amber_resinous is the styrax that Premiere Peau says brings 'smoke without harshness' and is held down because this note is the harsh route rather than the sun-tanned one. Animalic is not stated for the smoked register by either source and is carried only because leather accords generally hold it, with castoreum recorded as abandoned. Tobacco_hay, sweet_vanillic, green for the isobutyl quinoline edge, and mineral for ash are all traces.

Origin

Leather has no natural extract. Premiere Peau describes the smell of tanned skin as 'a blend of phenols, cresols, tars, and smoke accumulated during birch wood tanning, drying, and dyeing', and lists the historical tools as styrax, birch tar, castoreum and isobutyl quinoline. Birch tar is the one that carries the smoke: ScenTree describes wood heated to between 1112 and 1472 degrees Fahrenheit to yield 'a viscous and dark mixture with a smoky smell', and files the material itself under 'Burnt Leather > Burnt > Leather > Smoky Woods'. On the synthetic side Premiere Peau names Safraleine as the captive that 'evokes smoked leather' by name. Castoreum is recorded as abandoned.
