About

Tayberry is a Rubus hybrid of blackberry and raspberry, bred in Scotland in 1979. As a note it is a dark red-purple berry: juicy and fruity first, tart underneath, with a sweet floral top that produce sources name twice and an earthy undertone they name twice as well. Fragrantica puts it as larger and sweeter than the loganberry, which is the same cross.

Scent Profile

Fruity leads, and both trade sources describe the same shape: raspberry's sweet tartness fused with blackberry's richness. Sour is that tartness plus the 'tannin-sweet' astringency the Perfume Society names. Floral is the facet that separates this from its siblings: Specialty Produce calls the aroma 'sweet and floral' twice in the same entry and says it intensifies as the fruit ripens. Sweet_vanillic is the ripeness itself, and it is set above loganberry's 0.32 because Fragrantica states plainly that tayberry fruit is sweeter than loganberry. Earthy is the 'deep, earthy undertones' the same produce source names twice. Under the naming line, green for the bramble and boozy for the wine-like edge that runs through the whole Rubus group.

Origin

Rubus fruticosus x Rubus idaeus, raised at the Scottish Horticultural Research Institute at Invergowrie on the River Tay and released in 1979. The plant does not occur in the wild. There is no tayberry-specific aroma chemical and no manufacturer datasheet for one. Commercial tayberry accords are built from generic red-berry aroma chemicals, so this note describes the fruit as produce and horticultural sources smell it, not a traded material.

Usage in Perfumery

A heart note for fruity and fruity-floral compositions that want a darker, more tannic berry than raspberry and a more floral one than blackberry. It works where a red-fruit accord needs an earthy anchor rather than a candied one.
