Cape Chamomile
Note Profile
About
Boozy, honeyed apple-pear fruit
Scent Profile
Cape chamomile smells powerfully fruity, like apple and pear with a flash of pineapple. A boozy, honeyed warmth runs under the fruit, close to a fruit liqueur. Behind that sit a soft floral side, a gentle spice and an earthy, herbal back. The fruit lasts well into the dry-down, and it is far fruitier and less hay-like than ordinary chamomile.

ScentArt
Origin
Cape chamomile is Eriocephalus punctulatus, a South African fynbos shrub. It is not a true chamomile (Chamaemelum or Matricaria). The essential oil is steam-distilled from the plant and is rich in short-chain esters such as isobutyl and isoamyl butyrate.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use it as a diffusive fruity heart that lifts florals and fruit accords with a warm, liqueur-like sweetness. It works much like davana, and the trade took it up in the early 1970s before supply failed.
