Water mint's own smell is musty and earthy where peppermint's is cold and clean. It is one of peppermint's two wild parents, but the resemblance stops at the family tree.

Scent Profile

Earthy leads and nutty follows close behind, both carried by menthofuran, the compound the wild-population GC studies name most consistently as water mint's major constituent. The Good Scents Company gives menthofuran's odour outright as 'pungent musty nutty earthy coffee', elsewhere expanded to 'diffusive, pungent, musty, nutty, pyrazine like, nutty, earthy and coffee' - the direct source for earthy, nutty and the coffee_cacao trace. Cooling_mentholic sits, real but well under peppermint's 0.85: it comes from 1,8-cineole (an 'herbal' odour per TGSC, camphoraceous-eucalyptus in the wider trade literature), menthone and pulegone rather than from menthol, which several of the surveyed chemotypes carry at well under 1%. Green is the plain crushed-leaf freshness foragers describe - 'a clear, pure minty freshness that soothes and clears the nose' - and dry_woody is beta-caryophyllene's small woody-spice lift, a secondary constituent in most of the surveyed oils.

Origin

Steam-distilled from Mentha aquatica, a wetland mint native across Europe, north-west Africa and south-west Asia, and one of the two wild parents of peppermint (Mentha x piperita = M. aquatica x M. spicata). Its own oil chemistry does not resemble its hybrid offspring's. GC studies of wild populations from Croatia, Serbia, Iran, Corsica, Italy, Ethiopia, Turkey and the Balkans repeatedly find menthofuran and 1,8-cineole as the leading pair, with limonene, beta-caryophyllene, menthone and linalool as secondary constituents and pulegone present in some populations. The species is chemically polymorphic rather than fixed: an Ethiopian population ran 70.5% menthofuran, an Italian selection 58.5%, while a Turkish population instead ran 55.3% 1,8-cineole with almost no menthofuran.

Usage in Perfumery

A minor accent, not a lead. Its musty, coffee-tinged undertone gives a mint accord a darker, less clean edge than peppermint or spearmint would provide. Suited to a 'mint gone slightly wrong' character rather than fresh cooling.
