Inspired Perfumes' 315 takes on one of niche perfumery's most acclaimed rose fragrances, Frederic Malle's Portrait of a Lady, following its note structure closely: a spiced rose top of clove, raspberry, black currant and cinnamon, a patchouli-incense-sandalwood heart, and a musk-benzoin-amber base. The rose-patchouli combination is genuinely well matched here, and the clove-cinnamon spicing gives a similarly murky, oriental edge to the opening. What the oil format cannot replicate is the sheer scale of the original - Portrait of a Lady is renowned among perfume enthusiasts for a massive patchouli-incense blast that can project for hours and, on fabric, has been reported to last well over a day. This dupe's incense and patchouli are noticeably lighter and the whole composition fades far sooner, more a soft, warm rose than the smoky powerhouse the Malle original is famous for. Still, as an affordable everyday taste of that dark, spiced rose character, it holds up better than most in this range.
