Tobacco Orangerie closes Sentier's premium-tier 2024 quintet with the most classically-coded composition - tobacco leaf, leather and labdanum at the heart, oud-frankincense-patchouli-sandalwood at the base. The Orangerie conceit gives it a distinctive opening: tangerine lifted by coriander and cumin, an unexpected spice-citrus pairing that the brand frames as the warm air of a historic Orangerie at midday. Cumin in the open is a polarising choice - some perfumers (Etat Libre d'Orange Rossy de Palma, Serge Lutens Arabie) lean into it; others avoid it; here it appears at low intensity to add a savoury-warm grounding under the tangerine. Within an hour the heart unfolds into tobacco leaf as the dominant note, with leather as a textural support and labdanum (resinous-amber) bridging the heart to the deep base. The base is the most loaded of the five Sentier premium compositions: patchouli, sandalwood, oud and frankincense building a slow, smoky-resinous-woody close. The composition sits squarely in the niche tobacco-amber register dominated by Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, By Kilian Back to Black, Hermes Ambre Narguile and Frapin 1697 - Sentier's version is closer to the drier, less sweet end of the genre because the cumin-coriander opening and the oud-frankincense base pull away from the syrupy gourmand register. Performance is the strongest in the Sentier premium quintet - tobacco-amber-oud bases are the most persistent fragrance composition class; expect eight to ten hours with strong sillage in the first two hours. Genderless by Sentier's house design, with the tobacco-leather-oud heart skewing slightly toward masculine-coded tradition. Best worn in autumn and winter; spring works in cool conditions; summer is too dense. Date and formal evening are the natural fit; office in a cooler, more permissive workplace; sport not at all.
