The most expensive perfume in the world came with a five-carat diamond and a Bentley, and you cannot buy it. The record is real and documented, so it comes first. After that comes the more useful question: of the perfumes UK retailers stock, which cost the most, and which of those are worth it.
The actual record
In November 2005, Clive Christian created a ten-bottle limited run called No.1 Imperial Majesty, priced at £115,000 (then $205,000) for a 500ml bottle, according to Guinness World Records. Each bottle came in a Baccarat crystal flacon set with a five-carat white diamond and an 18-carat gold collar, and the launch at the Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie inside Harrods included delivery in a Bentley. Seven of the ten were bought by private collectors. The remaining three still tour the world as part of Clive Christian's own collection, so there is nothing left to buy, whatever the price.
Everything below is a perfume that UK retailers we track list today. The picks come from the top of our price data per millilitre, with decants and obvious mispricings filtered out, and they are split by whether our verdicts think the price is earned.
Worth what it costs
Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 - Extrait de Parfum
Francis Kurkdjian built this extrait version in 2017: saffron and almond over jasmine and cedar, into ambergris, ambroxan and cashmeran.
Our verdict calls the result an ultra-luxurious, decadent cloud, and on this list it is one of the clearest cases of a higher price buying something the standard eau de parfum does not quite reach. If you already know the original, this is what it sounds like turned up.
Guerlain Jicky Extrait - Extrait de Parfum
Aimé Guerlain built this in 1889 on lavender and lemon over a spiced base of vanilla and woods.
Our verdict does not hedge: a legendary, era-defining fragrance that is not for the shy, and pure perfection for the people who connect with it. This is as close as the list gets to buying a piece of perfume history rather than a bottle of scent.
Guerlain Mitsouko Extrait - Extrait de Parfum
Jacques Guerlain composed this in 1919: bergamot, jasmine and rose over peach and ylang-ylang, on oakmoss, cinnamon and vetiver.
Our verdict calls it a masterful, timeless chypre that inspires something close to religious devotion in people who already love the style, and is just as likely to read as strange to someone new to it. At this price, that split is worth knowing before you buy rather than after.
Xerjoff Richwood - Eau de Parfum
Jacques Flori built this in 2010 around tangerine, grapefruit and bergamot over rose and blackcurrant, on sandalwood, patchouli, vanilla and labdanum.
Our verdict calls it a benchmark sandalwood chypre, powerfully opulent but seamlessly blended rather than loud for its own sake. This is the pick on the list that comes closest to justifying its price on construction alone.
Jean Patou Joy Parfum Baccarat Edition - Parfum
Tuberose and ylang-ylang over rose and jasmine, on musk and sandalwood, in a crystal flacon from Baccarat, the same crystal house behind the record-breaking bottle above.
Our verdict calls it pure class in a bottle: sharp to begin with, ultimately smooth and beautiful. The price buys a rare object as much as a fragrance.
Priced beyond what it delivers
Three of the four picks here share a name: the house behind the record-breaking bottle above also makes most of the expensive fragrances our verdicts hesitate over.
Clive Christian Perfume No. 1 - Eau de Parfum
Nutmeg, cardamom and lime over iris, ylang-ylang and rose, on sandalwood, amber, musk and vanilla.
This is the standard line from the same house behind the record above, and our own verdict is not kind: divisive, overpriced and often misunderstood, either a pioneering masterpiece or a dated, powdery soap bar, with no middle ground. The price is not in question. Whether it buys something you will enjoy wearing is a different question, and our verdict says proceed carefully.
Clive Christian Perfume No1 Feminine - Parfum
Apricot, peach and plum over ylang-ylang, iris and jasmine, on sandalwood, vanilla, benzoin and tonka.
Our verdict is deeply split: some wearers find it a regal, complex classic, others find it shockingly close to far cheaper fragrances. The price buys undeniably rich materials. It does not buy agreement on whether the result justifies them.
Clive Christian Perfume V for Men Amber Fougere With Smoky Vetiver - Extrait de Parfum
Christian Provenzano built this in 2017 on pepper and bergamot over frankincense, on vetiver, smoke and amber.
Our verdict is a genuine coin-flip: some find the peppery, smoky vetiver a masterpiece of mature masculinity, others dismiss the same bottle as cardboard and dull. Nobody can promise which side of the coin you will land on.
Boadicea the Victorious Resplendent - Eau de Parfum
Saffron, absinth and frankincense over osmanthus, tuberose and jasmine, on tonka, labdanum and amber.
Our verdict calls it seriously opulent and velvet-smooth, then adds its own caveat: several wearers think cheaper fragrances do something very similar. Try it before you commit.
What people ask
What is the most expensive perfume in the world? By the only verified record we could confirm, Clive Christian's No.1 Imperial Majesty, a ten-bottle run sold in 2005 for £115,000 a bottle. It is not something you can order today.
What is the most expensive perfume you can buy right now? Prices move too often for a single answer to hold. In the perfumes we track, the top of the price-per-millilitre range is held by crystal-bottled editions such as Joy's Baccarat edition and by small-batch houses including Roja Dove, Boadicea the Victorious and Clive Christian, with the Guerlain extraits not far behind. The buy rows above show today's prices.
Is there a single most expensive perfume for men? In our price data, the dearest fragrances marketed to men come from Clive Christian, and both of the ones above carry split verdicts. None of them is one our verdicts recommend without a caveat.
Does a higher price mean a better perfume? Not reliably. It more often means rarer or costlier raw materials, a higher concentration, or a limited production run, none of which guarantee that a given nose will enjoy the result. Several of the fragrances above cost more than almost anything else we track and still divide opinion.
What the price data shows
Leave out one-off collector's pieces and the top of the UK price range is mostly unisex niche houses and historic feminine extraits, the concentrated versions of scents composed long before anyone called perfume niche. Big masculine names barely feature. And a famous name at the top of a search result is not the same as a fragrance our verdicts can defend: several of the perfumes above earn their price only if you already know what you are buying into.
