Evyan

Evyan is an American perfume house created in New York in the mid 1940s by Austrian-born chemist Baron Walter Langer von Langendorff. Multiple historical sources place the start of the company in the mid to late 1930s, with 1945 widely cited as the year Evyan was formally established as a holding company in New York. The brand name itself is documented as a contraction of the names of the founder’s wife, Evelyn Diane, reflecting its origins as a very personal project rather than a corporate spin-off.

White Shoulders, first introduced in the 1940s and later re-marketed under the Evyan name, became the company’s defining success. Contemporary accounts describe White Shoulders as a floral fragrance built from neroli, gardenia, tuberose, jasmine, rose, and lilac, and it remains closely associated with mid‑century American perfumery. Evyan released a number of other perfumes in the 1940s and 1950s, including Most Precious (circa late 1940s to early 1950s) and the masculine scent The Baron, launched in 1961, but none matched the cultural impact of White Shoulders.

Archival commentary on Evyan emphasizes that its perfumes were positioned as high-quality American alternatives to French imports, with production reportedly kept in the United States. While the company is no longer a major contemporary launch platform, its vintage catalog is still actively collected and discussed by enthusiasts, who seek out original formulations of White Shoulders, Most Precious, and other mid‑century releases for their historical interest and characteristic floral style.
