Maison Louis Marie
Botanical, clean-formula fragrances and candles with a soft, wearable profile at accessible niche prices.
Maison Louis Marie is a Los Angeles based fragrance and home scent brand founded by perfumer and designer Marie du Petit Thouars. The line is named after her ancestor Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars, an 18th century French botanist who was exiled to Madagascar, La Réunion and Mauritius during the French Revolution and returned to France with more than 2,000 plant specimens, later becoming a member of the Académie des Sciences. Drawing on this botanical heritage, Marie began making candles and experimenting with scent as a child in Belgium, spending time in her grandfather’s nursery and her mother’s greenhouse before launching the brand with an initial collection of six fragrances.
From the outset, Maison Louis Marie has focused on clean formulations and environmental commitments. The brand states that its perfumes, candles and skincare are free from parabens, phthalates, sulfates and several other commonly used ingredients of concern, are vegan and not tested on animals. They highlight the use of sustainable packaging and partnerships with organizations such as 1% for the Planet, the National Forest Foundation and Climate Neutral. Signature creations include No.04 Bois de Balincourt, inspired by the family’s country estate outside Paris and its surrounding forest path known as Lover’s Lane, which has become the label’s most widely recognized scent.
The range centers on wearable, plant‑inspired compositions in both personal fragrance and home products, often revisiting family places and memories as specific scent stories. Collaboration between Marie and her husband, Matthew Berkson, has helped expand the distribution of the brand while keeping development in house. Today, Maison Louis Marie positions itself at the intersection of accessible pricing and more boutique presentation, offering oils, eaux de parfum, candles and body products that all share a clear emphasis on botanical themes and sustainability claims.
A indie, mid house known for woody compositions.
Maison Louis Marie began with a small set of six scents focused on candles and personal fragrance oils, gradually expanding into eaux de parfum, diffusers and body products. Over time, the brand has sharpened its clean-beauty positioning, publicly detailing ingredient exclusions and pursuing third-party climate and environmental partnerships. While the core aesthetic remains light, woody and botanical, newer launches increasingly explore different settings within the family narrative, such as beachy or more resinous interpretations, without abandoning the brand’s soft-spoken style.
Maison Louis Marie is a solid choice if you want low-key, botanical-leaning scents and candles with a clean-ingredient focus and do not need monster projection. If you crave high drama, complexity or loud statement perfumes, this line will likely feel too polite.
