Ortigia Sicilia
Sicily-focused niche soaps, perfumes and home scents built around local botanicals and bold visual design.
Ortigia Sicilia is an Italian soap and fragrance company founded in 2006 by British designer Sue Townsend after she became captivated by the history, art and landscape of Sicily.[1][3][4] The brand is based in Sicily and takes its name from Ortigia, the small island that forms the ancient heart of Siracusa on the island’s southeastern coast.[1][4] Townsend also designs the brand’s highly decorative packaging, which draws directly from traditional Sicilian imagery, colors and architecture.[1][4]
From the outset, Ortigia Sicilia has focused on products built around ingredients native to Sicily, including citrus fruits, pomegranate, almond, pistachio and local flowers.[1][2][4] Its soaps, perfumes, creams, candles and room fragrances are made using natural bases such as olive oil, vegetable glycerin and organic colorants, with formulas that are free from parabens, SLS, nickel and silicone, and not tested on animals.[1][2] The perfumes are composed in collaboration with Florentine perfumer Lorenzo Villoresi, using distillations from Sicilian flowers and plants.[1][2]
The range centers on a compact but distinctive set of scent lines, such as Fico d’India, Zagara, Ambra Nera and Florio, each designed to showcase a specific facet of Sicilian botanicals and landscape. Retailers and reviewers consistently highlight the strong sense of place, emphasizing how the line leans into sunlit citrus, aromatic herbs, florals and resins rather than abstract, fashion-driven accords.[2][3][4] Production is handled by small Italian family firms, which aligns the brand more with artisanal niche than mass luxury.[1][2]
Over time Ortigia Sicilia has broadened from soaps and home fragrance into a full bath, body and home offering, but it has kept its focus on Sicilian materials and decorative storytelling.[1][3][4] The result is a coherent identity: accessible, compact compositions, rich packaging, and a clear geographic anchor that appeals to fragrance lovers looking for a sense of locality and to gift buyers seeking visually striking, naturally oriented products.
A niche, premium house known for citrus compositions.
Since its launch in 2006, Ortigia Sicilia has grown from a small Sicilian soap and scent project into an international brand stocked by specialist boutiques and lifestyle retailers.[1][3][4] The core concept of using Sicilian botanicals and decorative motifs has remained consistent, while the assortment expanded from bar soaps and basic colognes into bath oils, body creams, room diffusers and a broader candle and home fragrance line.[1][3] Instead of chasing seasonal releases, the brand has consolidated a stable set of scents that are repeated across product formats, reinforcing a tight, identity-driven catalog.[1][2]
A visually striking, regionally anchored niche line that excels at soaps, home fragrance and light, easygoing perfumes rather than powerhouse, high-concept compositions. Best for those who value sense of place, design and gentle wear over complexity or projection.
