Stora Skuggan
Concept-heavy Swedish niche house making small-batch, story-driven perfumes in Stockholm.
Stora Skuggan is a Stockholm-based perfume studio founded in 2015 by a collective of five multidisciplinary creatives, including Anna Barkne, Olle Hemmendorff, Jakob Hempel, Jonas Nordin and Martin Nicolausson. The name means “big shadow” in Swedish and refers to Stora Skuggan park in Stockholm, a local reference that anchors the project in its home city. All fragrances are developed and handmade in Stockholm, with the founders retaining full control over formulation, design and packaging rather than outsourcing to external perfumers or agencies.
From the outset, the brand has treated each perfume as a self-contained concept built around a myth, historical reference or peculiar phenomenon. Early releases such as Fantôme de Maules (2015), inspired by a ghostly figure from the Swiss village of Maules, and Silphium, named after an extinct ancient medicinal and aromatic plant, established this narrative-driven approach. Later scents like Mistpouffer, reportedly developed over four years, and Thumbsucker, launched in 2020 and referencing both a Hindu myth and Freudian theory, continue this focus on storytelling and unusual subject matter.
The compositions make use of both high-quality naturals and synthetics, with a clear emphasis on avoiding cheaper substitutes and working slowly in small batches. Notes such as bergamot, oakmoss, vetiver and tonka bean in Fantôme de Maules illustrate a style that often blends earthy, woody and slightly offbeat accords rather than simple crowd-pleasing themes. The bottles reinforce the conceptual identity: minimalist glass forms topped with oversized, handmade orb-like caps that have become a visual signature.
Across the range, releases are infrequent and carefully curated rather than driven by a fast launch schedule, which has helped the house build a following among niche fragrance enthusiasts and design-focused retailers. Stora Skuggan is particularly associated with imaginative storytelling, distinctive bottle design and a willingness to pursue unusual ideas even when they sit far from mainstream trends.
A niche, luxury house known for woody compositions.
Since launching in 2015, Stora Skuggan has kept its catalog tight, adding new scents only sporadically rather than chasing rapid expansion. Early releases leaned heavily into eerie and historical themes like ghosts and extinct plants, while newer ones broaden the reference pool to include psychological and religious narratives. Over time the formulas have become a bit more polished without losing the odd angles and narrative focus that attracted attention in the first place.
One of the more genuinely offbeat small houses: if you enjoy strange ideas executed with care, this is worth seeking out. If you want easy compliments and obvious signatures, it will likely feel too esoteric.
