About

Adoxal is Givaudan's trade name for 2,6,10-trimethylundec-9-enal, CAS 141-13-9. Symrise sells the same molecule as Farenal. It is a branched long-chain aldehyde that smells marine and ozonic rather than fatty. ScenTree says it is 'used to work on aqueous, ozonic and juicy fruits notes for a very similar appearance to Calone'. DirectPCW reads it as 'aldehydic, slightly woody, slightly lactic, and clean, with a slightly modified C11 aldehyde facet'. PerfumersWorld lists 'green, watery, waxy, rosy, ozone, violet'. All three readings are in the trade literature and none of the three treats the others as wrong.

Scent Profile

Adoxal smells of a marine, ozonic freshness with an aldehydic edge that some noses read as the stronger of the two. A green top note comes first, brightened by fresh floral hints of rose and violet. Underneath sits a waxy fullness and a light fruity juiciness like ripe fruit. A faint dry woody note and a soft clean musk linger, with a milky lactonic touch, a cool mineral edge and a dusting of powder in the finish.

Origin

A synthetic aroma chemical, not an extract. The molecule is 2,6,10-trimethylundec-9-enal (CAS 141-13-9, PubChem CID 98403), listed as the material 2-6-10-trimethylundec-9-enal. Givaudan sells it as Adoxal and Symrise as Farenal. Sandalore is a constitutional isomer, the same atoms in a different arrangement, and ScenTree notes it 'has a very different smell as it is woodier and more sandalwood'.

Usage in Perfumery

A trace material. DirectPCW gives a typical use level of 0.05 to 0.5%, PerfumersWorld 0.03% minimum, 0.3% average, 2.7% maximum. It is used to build marine and ozonic effects where Calone would be too melon-like, and to give lift to muguet, lily, gardenia and violet accords.
