Star magnolia is a light, lemony floral with a waxy skin. The trade description is 'clean, citrus-floral, and waxy', with a creamy sweetness, a green edge and a hint of musk. It is the thin, transparent version of magnolia rather than the heavy one. The one trade source that describes it says so directly: 'lighter and more transparent than the heavy sweetness of southern magnolias'.

Origin

Magnolia stellata, a deciduous Japanese species introduced to the United States in the 1860s. It flowers in February to April, before the leaves open, and a nursery source calls the flowers 'large mildly fragrant double flowers'. No source confirms whether the perfumery note is a natural extract. Several horticultural sources say the species is not commercially extracted, but that was not confirmed from a perfumery-industry source, so treat the note as most likely a reconstruction.

Usage in Perfumery

A transparent floral for the top and upper heart. It is used where plain magnolia would be too heavy, and it carries its own citrus, so it needs less lemon material alongside it. Attested in 1 Fragrantica perfume and 2 Parfumo placements across 1 brand, so it is a rare term.
