About
Star magnolia is a light, lemony floral with a green, watery freshness. Premiere Peau calls it 'clean, citrus-floral, and waxy', with a creamy sweetness and a hint of musk. It is the thin, transparent kind of magnolia, not the heavy one: 'lighter and more transparent than the heavy sweetness of southern magnolias'.

Star magnolia smells clean, lemony and floral, with a soft, creamy, waxy sweetness. It is lighter and more transparent than the heavy southern magnolias. A cool green, watery freshness runs under it, with a faint musk. Beneath the lemon sits a soft white flower sweetness, like jasmine.

Origin
Magnolia stellata, a deciduous Japanese species introduced to the United States in the 1860s. It flowers from February to April, before the leaves open. TopTropicals calls the flowers 'large mildly fragrant double flowers'. No extract of this species was found on sale on 2026-10-10, so treat the note as a reconstruction of the living flower.
Usage in Perfumery
A transparent floral for the heart, used where plain magnolia would be too heavy. Jo Malone London built Star Magnolia (2017, perfumer Anne Flipo) around it, with lemon, ginger and shiso on top and neroli beside it in the heart. It is a rare term.
