About

Calendula is the pot marigold, Calendula officinalis. It smells like a crushed flower head, not a bouquet. Bitter herbs come first, then green stems and a medicinal edge, with pollen dust over the top. Under that sits a warm musky sweetness that shows with heat or wear, and a faint resin at the base. Premiere Peau puts it plainly: "Herb garden, not flower garden."

Origin

Calendula officinalis, an annual of the daisy family grown across Europe and now worldwide. Perfumery uses an extract of the flower head. It is a different genus from Tagetes, which is the marigold behind the published french-marigold and african-marigold notes.

Usage in Perfumery
