About
Canvas is the smell of heavy woven cloth: a tent, a kit bag, an artist's stretched canvas. Most sources read it as dry, fibrous and faintly dusty, with a starchy edge and a flat, woody smell of plant fibre. Fragrantica reads it another way, as earthy, moist and slightly bitter. Perfumers use it as a texture in art-studio themes, not as a scent on its own.

Origin
There is no canvas extract. Nothing is distilled from cloth, so the note is an accord. One perfume house builds it from cellulosic-woody materials, starchy notes, clean musks and dry textural materials. No single molecule defines it. The note databases disagree on the target. The Scent Base says dry, fibrous and slightly dusty. Fragrantica says earthy, moist, soggy and slightly bitter. Commercial fragrance oils sold as canvas build something else, the idea of a blank canvas, from clean linen and white cotton. Owners of real canvas describe a third smell, the preservative on new army tentage, which they call nostalgic.
Usage in Perfumery
Canvas is rare. On 2026-10-10 Fragrantica lists it in two perfumes. Chelsea Staircase by Thin Wild Mercury (2023) puts stretched canvas in the heart beside sunflower. Gentle, NOW by TADHANA (2026) puts it in the base with orris and cedar. Both use it to stand for an artist's canvas. It gives other notes a dry, neutral backdrop. Anyone reaching for the clean-laundry effect should use linen instead, which this vocabulary already holds and which is a different smell.
