Eggnog is a fantasy gourmand accord that reconstructs the winter drink: egg custard, sweetened dairy, vanilla, and warm baking spice, sometimes over rum or bourbon. It is not an extract of anything. Perfumers build it from lactones for the custard, vanillin and tonka for the sweetness, and nutmeg, cinnamon and clove for the spice.

Scent Profile

Lactonic is the body and the one thing all three sources agree on: Demeter calls it 'a delightful, creamy, concoction', Vinevida puts 'Custard' at the top of its own build. Sweet_vanillic sits right behind it, carried by vanilla, condensed milk, sugar and tonka across two sources. Warm_spice is the third voice and every source names it, though they disagree on which spice leads - Demeter puts nutmeg first with cinnamon as 'a dash', Village Craft & Candle lists cinnamon, clove and nutmeg as equals, Vinevida splits cinnamon into the heart and clove into the base. Boozy is the rum and bourbon accord, named outright by one source only, which is why it is not higher. Under all of it a faint sulphurous egg-yolk richness, a little amber warmth, a trace of red berry and orange, and the powdery marzipan edge tonka brings.

Origin

Prepared drink, reconstructed. No essential oil, absolute or CO2 extract of eggnog exists. Every commercial version is a blend of aroma chemicals and accords. Village Craft & Candle publishes its build as red berries and dark wild cherries on top, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg in the heart, and rum accord, bourbon accord and tonka in the base. Vinevida publishes a different one for the same term: custard and orange on top, cinnamon, condensed milk and sugar in the heart, amber, clove and vanilla in the base.

Usage in Perfumery

A seasonal gourmand note, used in winter and Christmas compositions and heavily in candles and fragrance oils. It sits in the heart and base and carries a composition on its own. Attested in 7 Fragrantica perfumes and absent from Parfumo, so its real weight is in scented products rather than fine fragrance.
