Goji berry refers to the fruit of Lycium barbarum, a shrub in the nightshade family native to China and parts of Asia, widely known as wolfberry. In perfumery, there is no commonly traded essential oil, but a fruit absolute (CAS 85085-46-7) has been catalogued and is derived from the dried berries. Analytical studies show that volatiles in dried goji berries are dominated by alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones, especially green C6 aldehydes like hexanal and (E)-2-hexenal formed from lipid oxidation during drying.

Usage in Perfumery

Because there is no widely available essential oil and the absolute is rarely traded, goji berry most often appears as a fantasy note constructed from synthetic aroma chemicals such as green C6 aldehydes, ionones, linalool and limonene to evoke its fruity-green character. It is typically used as a top-to-heart modifier, adding an exotic, tart, and slightly savoury accent that freshens and individualizes fruity, floral or gourmand compositions.
