About

Goji berry, also called wolfberry, is a fruity note named after the dried red fruit of Lycium barbarum. In perfume it is mostly a built accord that reads bright, sweet and juicy, with a tart edge. It is rarer than the common red-berry notes.

Scent Profile

Goji berry smells of sweet, juicy red fruit with a tart, slightly sour edge. A green, leafy freshness sits behind the fruit. The rare natural absolute is darker and jammier, close to berry jam and fig, with a touch of honey and sweet spice. Dried goji adds a cooked-apple, raisin-like note. It carries a sparkling, slightly soapy aldehydic lift and a soft floral touch beside the fruit.

Goji berry is the fruit of Lycium barbarum, a shrub of the nightshade family native to China. No essential oil is traded. One natural-perfumery supplier sold a goji berry absolute from Nepal, which smelled of dark berry jam, fig, honey and black tea. Studies of the dried berry name acetic acid as its main odorant, with beta-damascenone (cooked apple), and green, fatty aldehydes such as (E)-2-nonenal.

Usage in Perfumery

Goji berry is a modest note: Parfumo lists 67 perfumes with it on 2026-10-10, mostly at the top. Perfumers build it from fruity and green aroma chemicals and use it to give a tart, juicy berry accent to fruity, floral and gourmand compositions. It pairs with red fruits, citrus, light florals and soft musks in fine fragrance, home scent and body care.
