A very powerful synthetic leather material. Dry tanned hide over a mossy, rooty base, with an ink-like edge and a sharp green top.

Scent Profile

Leather is unanimous. Givaudan leads with 'Leathery, Woody, Powerful', Symrise lists 'Leathery' among six terms, Scentspiracy says 'tanned leather' and The Perfumer's Apprentice says 'leathery'. Four independent trade sources, no dissent, so the spread. Mossy_chypre and earthy come from two sources that reached them separately: The Perfumer's Apprentice calls the odour 'intense, earthy, rooty' and says the character 'resembles certain facets of oakmoss and vetivert', and Scentspiracy says 'mossy woods'. Givaudan's placing it in chypre accords supports the same reading from the use side. Dry_woody is in every source. Green is the contested facet and carries the widest spread: Symrise names 'Green, Galbanum' on its own data sheet, and The Perfumer's Apprentice's 'rooty' points the same way, but Givaudan's description has no green in it whatsoever. Tobacco_hay is Scentspiracy's 'warm, tobacco-like' and The Perfumer's Apprentice's 'tobacco-like'. Animalic is Scentspiracy's 'animalic ink-like tones'. Smoky is Symrise's 'Phenol' plus the same ink reading. Nutty and fruity are each single-source (The Perfumer's Apprentice 'nutty', Symrise 'Apple') and are held low with spreads of 0.20 for that reason.

Origin

A quinoline derivative made by synthesis, not extracted. It is the material behind the classic leather chypre and the historic Mousse de Saxe base. The name covers more than one substance in trade: Symrise and Scentspiracy both sell CAS 68198-80-1, The Perfumer's Apprentice lists CAS 1333-58-0, and Givaudan's 'Isobutyl Quinoline-2' page gives no CAS at all.

Usage in Perfumery

Used at a fraction of a percent. Symrise recommends 0.01 to 1 percent and Scentspiracy says it typically appears below 1 percent. Givaudan places it in chypre, leather and woody accords for masculine work. Scentspiracy names birch tar, castoreum, vetiver, patchouli and oakmoss as its usual partners, and The Perfumer's Apprentice adds tobacco accords.
