About

Orchid cactus is the night flower of Epiphyllum, and despite the name it is neither an orchid nor a desert plant. It is an epiphytic rainforest cactus. The flower opens after dark, smells sweet, waxy and faintly green, and is finished by morning.

Scent Profile

White_floral leads and both descriptive sources put it first. Premiere Peau gives 'light, sweet, faintly waxy-floral with a green-succulent edge' and the niche house gives 'a white floral aromatic profile, part orchid and part Rangoon creeper or pink jasmine'. Green is the succulent edge, and it is one of the few things both sources reach independently, the second calling it green-minty. Lactonic is the waxy petal, and one source gives a cause for it: 'the ubiquitous accent of waxy petals that all cactus flowers have thanks to the presence of linoleates'. Clean_musk is stated by both, as 'soft musky-floral warmth' and as plain 'musky', and it is also what the reconstruction uses for the ephemeral quality. Floral is the plain sweet body under the white-floral character. Sweet_vanillic carries the word sweet, which appears in every source including a plant retailer's 'exquisite perfume'. Below the named line: fruity for 'almost fruity, and reminiscent of Datura', fresh_spice for the 'trace of spice' both sources mention, aquatic_ozonic for 'clean, dewy freshness', tropical for the humid-jungle framing, and citrus with cooling_mentholic for the lemony and green-minty claims. Those last two come from one source only and are the least settled values in this vector.

Origin

No commercial essential oil or absolute of Epiphyllum is produced. Premiere Peau states this outright, so every perfumery use is a reconstruction. The accord is built from light white-floral materials such as linalool and lily-of-the-valley synthetics, a trace of waxy-green notes, and clean musks for the fleeting, nocturnal quality. A niche house that makes its own rendition of Epiphyllum oxypetalum describes the living flower's headspace as wider than that: 'musky, spicy, green-minty, and lemony at the same time' over a floral-sweet, almost fruity base.

Usage in Perfumery

A light heart-note floral. Three Fragrantica placements and none on Parfumo. It gives a nocturnal and tropical reference without the narcotic weight of tuberose or night-blooming jasmine, which is the comparison the source makes twice and the reason a formula would choose it over either.
