Origin

Pinene is a bicyclic monoterpene found abundantly in the essential oils of pine trees and other conifers. It is typically obtained through steam distillation of pine resin or wood, and is present in both alpha- and beta-pinene isomers. Industrially, it is also isolated from turpentine oil, a byproduct of the paper and timber industries.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use pinene primarily as a top note to impart freshness and lift in woody, green, and aromatic compositions. It blends well with other terpenes, citrus, herbal, and balsamic notes, enhancing naturalistic and outdoorsy accords. Pinene is valued for its ability to add realism and vibrancy, especially in fougère, chypre, and forest-inspired fragrances.
