About

Pipe tobacco is the cased, sweetened blend as it smells in the tin, not lit. Cured leaf leads. Over it sits a sweetness raw leaf does not carry: honey, coumarinic hay and dark spice in the trade descriptions, and sugar, vanilla and rum from the casing. CA Perfume draws the line explicitly: 'Unlike the acrid smell of burning tobacco, the perfumery note is reminiscent of cured leaf, dried fruits, and aged wood, rather than cigarette smoke.'

Scent Profile

Pipe Tobacco smells of cured leaf first, the tin rather than the lit pipe. A honeyed sweetness sits over it, matched by a sugar, vanilla and rum casing that raw leaf never carries. Dried fruit and cherry and strawberry casings add a fruity layer. Underneath is an aged, dry woody depth, like a crafted wooden humidor, and a subtle leathery undertone. The drydown turns rich and balsamic, amber resinous rather than raw. Dark spices give it a warm spice note throughout.

Much commercial pipe tobacco is Cavendish, leaf 'heat treated with fire or steam and then subjected to heavy pressure in order to produce a sweet taste with a moist texture'. American, Dutch and Danish Cavendish add flavourings, and the list is sugar, cherry, maple, honey, licorice, chocolate, coconut, rum, strawberry, vanilla, walnut and bourbon. No manufacturer sells a material labelled 'pipe tobacco'. In perfumery the note is built from tobacco absolute plus that sweetness.
