About

Veloutone is a Firmenich captive, CAS 65443-14-3. It smells of jasmine over a soft fruit lactone, peach and apricot with a creamy body, and a faint lavender lift. Its working value is stability: it holds a soft floral effect where more fragile jasmine materials fail.

Scent Profile

Veloutone smells of a lactonic, creamy peach and apricot fruitiness first, velvety rather than sharp. Jasmine sits behind it as the floral heart, softer and less indolic than raw jasmine itself, with a touch of muguet and lilac alongside. A faint musky warmth runs low underneath, and a hint of lavender lifts the top.

Origin

A synthetic. ScenTree records it as discovered in 1976 and part of the Hedione family, a by-product of methyl jasmonate synthesis, and states plainly that it 'is not reported to be found in nature. It is neither available as natural ingredient.' Firmenich has held the Veloutone trademark since 18 January 2012. Perfumer and Flavorist lists it as Firmenich 990257.

Usage in Perfumery

A heart-to-base floral modifier with unusual stability. ScenTree says it 'has very wide use because of its exceptional stability' and names jasmine, tuberose, honeysuckle, muguet and lilac accords, plus fruity, lavender and herbal work. Use it to hold a soft floral through a harsh base such as a detergent or a soap. Attested on 2 Fragrantica note listings and 1 Parfumo placement across 1 brand, which understates its real use because captives are rarely printed on a note list.
