Whisky Lactone
Note Profile
About
Toasted coconut lactone with tonka and celery
Scent Profile
Whisky lactone smells of coconut and tonka, richer and more intense than the classic creamy lactones. A toasted, nutty note and a fresh wood tone run through it, with a hint of maple sweetness. An odd green celery edge sits beside the coconut. It is not boozy, despite its name.

Origin
Whisky lactone is a single aroma chemical, methyl octalactone, also called oak lactone or quercus lactone. It takes its name from aged spirits, where it was first found, and it is an important part of the smell of drinks aged in oak. Suppliers sell it as a mix of isomers.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use it inside a lactone blend to add interest and depth, not as a whisky note. Its supplier says the link to whiskey is tenuous. It sits in the base, where it lends a woody coconut and tonka warmth.
