Saont III chases the unmistakable signature of Le Labo's Santal 33 - the dry, woody-aromatic scent that became a defining smell of the 2010s. It opens with a sharp burst of Virginia cedar and a cool flick of cardamom, that crisp wood-shavings effect that makes the original so recognisable. The heart brings the creamier side: sandalwood softened by powdery violet, a touch of papyrus and a warm, gentle leather. The base settles into amber and iris, lending a smooth, slightly powdery finish. Against the original it captures the famous shape faithfully - that cedar-sandalwood-leather core is all present - but the budget rendition leans a shade drier and more aromatic, the creamy, almost milky sandalwood that rounds out the Le Labo reading a little thinner here. Performance is where the gap shows most: Santal 33 is a long-lasting beast, while Saont III projects more modestly and fades sooner.
