Le Labo's Santal 33 built a cult following on a single idea done with unusual richness: a creamy, almost leathery sandalwood wrapped in cardamom spice and a whisper of violet and iris, so dense it reads as much as a texture as a scent. Copycat's 33 opens close - the cardamom-iris top is recognisable within seconds of spraying, and the sandalwood-cedarwood heart keeps the same warm, woody-leather direction the original is known for. Where it falls short is depth: Santal 33's sandalwood is thick, near-syrupy, and famously long-lasting on clothing for days, while 33's version is noticeably thinner, more linear, and settles into a simple musk within three or four hours rather than continuing to build. The leather note is present but polite rather than smoky, and the papyrus-cedar heart doesn't carry the same dry, minimalist edge the original is prized for. It's a decent way to sample the sandalwood-leather genre Santal 33 popularised without committing to the price, but anyone who has actually worn the original will clock the difference in richness immediately.
