St Giles The Tycoon is an Eau de Parfum launched in 2017, created by Bertrand Duchaufour. The Tycoon opens with Pomelo, Lemon, Ginger, and Galbanum, settles into a heart of Celery Seeds, Cypriol Oil or Nagarmotha, Magnolia, and Pepper, and dries down to a base of Lovage, Musk, Patchouli, and Oakmoss. St Giles's The Tycoon carries a Statement verdict, a woody-led wear.

A bitter green galbanum and pomelo chypre with ginger, black pepper and nutmeg over oakmoss and castoreum. Assertive, long-lasting and easy to wear to the office, it is cool and a little aloof, loved for its polish and found stuffy by a few.

Top, heart and base are the brand's own listing, not a timing claim - the industry classifies a note by its character as much as by how fast it fades. Each curve here is modelled from that material's own volatility, so groups can overlap when a house lists long-lasting materials in its heart.

When To Wear

Best Seasons

Best For:
Spring Summer Autumn
Also Works:
Winter

Spring leads the votes and autumn and summer follow, because the bitter green galbanum and zingy citrus read as fresh. Winter is the weakest, so it suits the milder half of the year.

Best Occasions

Best For:
Office Date Casual Formal

Leisure, business and daily wear lead the votes, with night out and evening close behind. It reads as an office scent as readily as an evening one, and sport is the weakest fit.

About

The Tycoon is the St Giles character dressed for the boardroom: opulent, self-assured and a little intimidating. Michael Donovan's London house asked Bertrand Duchaufour to give each character its own scent, and this one is a modern chypre that takes the wearer confidently from boardroom to bedroom. It opens bright and bitter: green galbanum and pomelo with green lemon and fresh ginger, a tart, dry citrus that wearers call zingy. The heart turns spicy and peppery, with cypriol, black pepper and nutmeg, a touch of celery, magnolia and tea. The base is the classic chypre foundation of oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum, sharpened by animalic castoreum, with the moss dominating the dry-down. It is a loud, piercing scent early on, with brilliant projection and about eight good hours of wear. It works in every season but most easily in spring and autumn, and suits the office, leisure and evenings alike. Opinion is split between those who find it a polished, universally wearable masterpiece and those who find it cool, aloof, stuffy or too bitter. It sits closer to a green, non-floral chypre than to a sweet designer, and wearers read it as masculine-leaning but wearable by anyone who loves galbanum. Sold in 50 ml and 100 ml, it is worth a sample first, because the bitter green opening is the whole point.
