Caswell-Massey
Historic American fragrance house focused on classic colognes and grooming scents.
Caswell-Massey was founded in Newport, Rhode Island in 1752 by Dr. William Hunter and is presented by the company as America’s original apothecary and perfumery. It is also described as the oldest continuously operating consumer brand in the United States and the country’s first fragrance company, with early roots in Dr. Hunter’s apothecary practice and the later preservation of his formulas in the brand archive.
The brand’s scent identity is centered on classic colognes, barbershop-style freshness, and heritage American perfumery rather than trend-driven releases. Its historical signature includes Number Six, which the company says was first decanted in 1772 and remains a core part of its identity, and Newport, introduced in 1890 as a refined seaside cologne. Across its current assortment, Caswell-Massey leans toward clean citrus, aromatic herbs, woods, and traditional masculine accords, with a strong emphasis on longevity and restrained elegance over loud projection.
Caswell-Massey’s strengths are its unusually deep history, its continuous connection to American scent traditions, and its stable, recognizable style. Its weaker point is that much of the line can feel conservative compared with modern niche brands, and the house is better suited to buyers who value classicism, nostalgia, and easy wear than to those seeking novelty or avant-garde composition. The brand has also expanded beyond fragrance into soaps and grooming products, but fragrance remains the clearest expression of its identity.
A retailer, premium house known for citrus compositions.
Caswell-Massey began as a Newport apothecary and later shifted into a broader fragrance and personal care house while keeping its heritage identity intact. The brand has preserved older formulas and historical names such as Number Six while also developing newer releases like Newport to reinforce its American coastal narrative. In recent years it has leaned harder into its origin story and archival legitimacy, using history itself as a central part of the brand proposition.
Caswell-Massey is best understood as a heritage American cologne house, not a modern trend brand. If you want polished, classic, and historically grounded fragrance, it has real credibility; if you want boundary-pushing perfumery, it will likely feel too traditional.
