Ortigia Sicilia
Note Profile
Bitter Orange Leaf, Orange Leaf, Orange Leaves, petigrain, Pettigrain
Green, leafy citrus
Petitgrain has a fresh, green citrus aroma with leafy, woody, and slightly floral undertones. It opens with a crisp, bitter zest and evolves to reveal softer, herbaceous facets. The scent is less sweet and more verdant than orange or neroli oils.
Petitgrain essential oil is distilled from the leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium). The primary producing regions are Paraguay, France, and Italy, where steam distillation is used to extract the oil.
Perfumers use petitgrain mainly as a top note to impart brightness and a green, leafy freshness to compositions. It blends well with other citrus oils, florals, and aromatic herbs, and is valued for adding complexity to colognes, fougères, and chypres.
Perfumers known for using Petitgrain include Thierry Wasser , François Demachy , Anne Flipo , Alberto Morillas , Carlos Benaïm , and Elodie Durande .
