Imprint

Literature-inspired niche perfumes from London, built as small-batch experimental editions.

About Imprint

Imprint is the current incarnation of perfumer Timothy Han’s literary fragrance project, which began in London in 2014 under the name Timothy Han / Edition. Han, who previously worked in the fashion world alongside designers such as John Galliano, launched his own brand to explore small-batch, narrative-driven perfumes produced from a London base. The original Timothy Han / Edition line focused on complex compositions that reinterpret books in scent, a concept that has been carried forward and expanded under the Imprint name.

The brand’s core idea is to treat perfume as a form of publishing. Imprint describes itself as a perfume publishing house, with each fragrance conceived as an olfactory “edition” inspired by a specific literary work. The debut Imprint collection, reported by WWD and other outlets, includes scents named after novels and texts such as She Came to Stay by Simone de Beauvoir, On the Road by Jack Kerouac, Against Nature by Joris-Karl Huysmans, The Decay of the Angel by Yukio Mishima, Mad Love by André Breton, and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. These perfumes are packaged in boxes modeled on paperback books, complete with original cover art, so they can be shelved and displayed like a personal library.

Han personally composes the fragrances despite not having formal perfumery training, working with a laboratory partner to ensure regulatory compliance. Interviews and brand materials highlight his preference for high proportions of natural materials and his willingness to let batches vary subtly over time, a deliberate contrast with mass-market consistency. Under both the Timothy Han / Edition and Imprint labels, his work has been stocked by stores such as Browns, 10 Corso Como, Liberty, and Mr Porter, and he has also created bespoke scents for projects including amenities for The Peninsula London and commissions for private clients.

Imprint continues the experimental approach developed with Edition, including playing with structure and evolution. Articles on Han’s work note that some Editions were designed to foreground the base and allow the composition to move in unconventional directions, reflecting his interest in challenging standard perfume formats. The relaunch as Imprint aims to build a broader “cultural platform” around the intersection of literature, visual art, and fragrance, with each new release conceived as another volume in an ongoing scented library.

Scent DNA

Woody Spicy Resinous Smoky Aromatic
  • Timothy Han’s scents tend to be layered, slightly offbeat compositions that lean into smoky woods, resins, and herbal facets rather than crowd-pleasing sweetness
  • Batches are intentionally allowed to vary a little, so the same perfume can feel subtly different across editions, which appeals to collectors but frustrates people who want rigid consistency
  • The literary framing means the perfumes often feel atmospheric and story-driven rather than built around a single obvious note

  • People bored with mainstream designer releases

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Highly distinctive, story-led compositions with strong artistic identity
  • Unisex, textural blends that favor woods, spice, and smoke over sugar
  • Packaging and concept are thoughtfully integrated with the juice, appealing to collectors

Weaknesses

  • Limited retail distribution makes sampling difficult outside key cities
  • Batch-to-batch variation can irritate users who expect exact repeat purchases
  • Conceptual, sometimes challenging style will not suit those wanting simple, easygoing scents

Brand Evolution

The project began as Timothy Han / Edition in 2014, focused on small-batch, literary-inspired fragrances produced out of London. Over time the line built a following in niche-oriented retailers and became known for embracing natural materials and accepting batch variation as part of the identity. The relaunch under the Imprint name formalizes the “perfume publishing house” concept, puts greater emphasis on book-like packaging and curated collections, and positions future releases as an expanding library rather than a conventional catalog of static SKUs.

Quick Verdict

Imprint is a niche, literary-leaning brand for people who treat perfume as art rather than accessory. It rewards curiosity and tolerance for variation, but will feel too esoteric for anyone who just wants a straightforward compliment magnet.
