Olfiction
Concept-driven British indie studio blending technical perfumery with bold, narrative-led compositions.
Olfiction is a British fragrance studio and consultancy founded in 2016 by perfumer Pia Long and creative director Nick Gilbert, following decades of work with established brands and suppliers. The company operates as Olfiction Limited, incorporated in July 2016, with its registered office in Buckinghamshire and studio activities centered in London. From the outset, Olfiction has combined technical perfumery expertise with narrative-driven creative direction, producing perfumes for its own labels as well as for other houses, retailers and industry organisations.
Alongside its client work, Olfiction has developed several in-house perfume lines, including Eau de Boujee, Demo Accords and the Lab Editions collection. Lab Editions, launched to mark the studio’s 10th anniversary, showcases limited production fragrances such as Iconic, Petrolhead and Salmiakki, each built around a clear conceptual brief: a luxuriant 1980s-style cream, the allure of petrol, or Finnish salted liquorice. These projects highlight the team’s preference for strong thematic anchors, meticulous material selection and a willingness to explore unusual, sometimes divisive accords.
The studio’s output spans animalic gourmands, resinous woods, retro florals, citrus colognes and experimental compositions, often with a nuanced use of aromachemicals and detailed note structures. Olfiction’s work for external clients, as documented by The Perfume Society and event partners such as the Barnes Fragrance Fair, includes bespoke accords and finished fragrances built around seasonal or narrative ideas like snow, Christmas trees and pomanders. This mix of consultancy, brand-building and self-authored collections positions Olfiction as a small but highly concept-led independent player within the contemporary British perfume scene.
A indie, premium house known for gourmand compositions.
Olfiction began primarily as a fragrance consultancy, creating accords and finished scents for other brands, retailers and organisations. Over time, it has invested more in its own labels, from Eau de Boujee and Demo Accords to the Lab Editions collection that marks its 10th anniversary. The creative direction has moved from behind-the-scenes work toward more visible, authorial perfumes that foreground Pia Long’s and Nick Gilbert’s personal ideas, tastes and narratives. Expect future releases to continue exploring tightly defined themes, small-batch formats and material-led experiments rather than chasing mainstream trends.
Olfiction is a sharp, idea-first indie studio whose perfumes feel thought-through, sometimes demanding, and rarely bland. If you value originality and narrative over crowd-pleasing simplicity, this is a house worth serious attention.
