About Phebo

Phebo was founded in 1930 in Belém, in Brazil’s Amazon region, by Portuguese cousins Antonio and Mario Santiago. Several sources note that they set out to create a Brazilian perfumery of very high quality, working with striking and original fragrances rather than simple functional soaps. The brand name references the Greek god Phoebus (Apollo), underlining an early positioning around a new, more refined era of Brazilian perfumery.

Phebo first became widely known for its oval, transparent "Odor de Rosas" soap, which turned into a staple product in Brazilian households and remains a classic reference for the brand. Over time, the range expanded well beyond bar soap to include liquid soaps, colognes, perfumes, deodorants, moisturizers, hand creams, bath salts, scented candles, diffusers, and makeup, while still keeping long-running heritage lines in production.

In 2004, Phebo was incorporated into Granado Pharmácias, a historic Brazilian company that had been acquired and revitalized by Christopher Freeman in the 1990s. Granado’s stewardship focused on renewing Phebo’s identity without discarding its traditional formulas and visuals; within a few years, new fragrance and home-scent collections were launched that built on the brand’s existing recognition.

Today, Phebo sits in an interesting space: it is widely available and multi-category in Brazil, yet its roots in Belém and its vintage designs give it a specialist, heritage feel. It is particularly associated with colognes and soaps that combine Brazilian raw materials and everyday usability with more perfumistic construction than typical mass-market bath products.

Scent DNA

Citrus Aromatic Floral Woody Soapy
  • Phebo fragrances tend to feel clean and wearable yet more structured than typical bath-and-body scents, with a strong soapy and cologne character running through much of the line
  • They often highlight citrus, aromatic herbs, and florals over a soft, resinous or woody base, reflecting both classic European cologne style and Brazilian ingredients
  • Packaging and scent profiles frequently reference the brand’s vintage roots, so even newer launches often feel nostalgic rather than ultra-trendy

Brand Evolution

Phebo began as a high-end soap and perfumery house in 1930, focusing on a few distinctive products like the transparent Odor de Rosas bar. After its incorporation into Granado Pharmácias in 2004, the brand received renewed investment and branding work, which led to a broader catalog of colognes, perfumes, and home fragrances. In recent years, Phebo has leaned into its heritage visuals and Amazon-linked story while expanding into more modern formats such as liquid soaps, diffusers, and makeup, keeping the core DNA of clean, cologne-like scents intact.

Quick Verdict

Phebo is a smart pick if you want characterful, vintage-leaning soaps and colognes with Brazilian roots rather than loud designer statements. It will not impress hardcore niche hunters looking for extreme originality, but it delivers reliable, pleasant scent with strong everyday usability and history behind it.
