Puredistance

Dutch independent extrait-only niche house focused on slow, concept-driven releases and high concentrations.

About Puredistance

Puredistance is a Dutch perfume house founded in 2007 by Jan Ewoud Vos. The idea for the brand dates back to 2002, when Vos set out to build a small, high-quality fragrance house based on a clear aesthetic vision rather than mass production. The company remains independent and is based in the Netherlands, working closely with master perfumers in Paris, London and New York.

From the outset, Puredistance chose to work exclusively with pure perfume extrait concentrations, typically around 25-32% perfume oils, rather than lighter eau de parfum formulas. The first launch, Puredistance I, appeared in 2007; over the following thirteen years only ten more perfumes were added, with Rubikona becoming the eleventh, reflecting the brand’s deliberate "less is more" release strategy. Compositions are created by acclaimed perfumers such as Annie Buzantian, Antoine Lie and Cécile Zarokian, based on detailed concepts and visual narratives developed by Vos.

Puredistance focuses strongly on distribution control and selective availability. Brand materials and retailer information highlight that fewer than 100 carefully chosen perfumeries worldwide are authorised to sell the line, and that the house aims for "understated elegance" rather than loud, trend-driven launches. This approach, combined with high concentrations and tightly edited output, has led reviewers and stockists to emphasize the line’s concentration, long wear and carefully defined personalities across fragrances like M, Black, White, Sheiduna and Warszawa.

  • Puredistance perfumes often favor smooth blends where no single note dominates, prioritizing texture, depth and a quietly luxurious aura over overt note fireworks
  • The house is recognizable by its combination of classic structure with contemporary detailing and a generally refined, intimate style rather than aggressive projection

Strengths

  • Consistently high oil concentrations with strong longevity

  • Sophisticated aesthetics and packaging that support the fragrance concepts

Weaknesses

Brand Evolution

The brand began in 2007 with a single perfume, Puredistance I, and deliberately expanded very slowly, reaching only eleven perfumes over roughly thirteen years according to brand material and press coverage. Early releases leaned more overtly classic and elegant, while later compositions like Black, White, Sheiduna and Rubikona show a broader range of moods and styles without abandoning the core extrait-only, understated concept. Over time Puredistance has refined its visual identity and presentation while keeping distribution tightly controlled and maintaining its focus on a small roster of master perfumers.

Quick Verdict

Puredistance is a connoisseur-focused house: expensive, controlled in output, and serious about extrait quality and presentation. If you value subtle luxury and long-wearing, carefully composed scents over trend-chasing or loud projection, it is well worth exploring, but sampling before investing is essential.
